Alston Construction Earns ABC STEP Diamond Level Safety Designation During 40th Anniversary Year

Alston Construction has achieved Diamond Level in Associated Builders and Contractors’ STEP® Health and Safety Management System, the organization’s highest safety recognition. The achievement comes during Alston’s 40th anniversary year, marking four decades of building with a safety-first culture.

STEP enables top-performing ABC members including Alston Construction to achieve incident rates significantly safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics construction industry average, reflecting a substantial reduction in total recordable incident rates compared to industry norms.
“Receiving the ABC STEP Diamond Level recognition during Alston’s 40th anniversary makes this achievement even more meaningful,” said Dave Campbell, Corporate Safety Director. “For four decades, we’ve built our reputation on taking care of our people. This recognition reflects the commitment of our employees, trade partners and project teams who make safety a core value every day, not just a priority.”

The real-world impacts of STEP are grounded in ABC’s 2025 Health and Safety Performance Report, an annual guide to construction jobsite best practices. Established in 1989, STEP gives contractors and suppliers a no-cost framework for measuring safety data and benchmarking against industry peers.

“STEP will help any contractor or supplier reinforce their commitment to the well-being of their workforce,” said Greg Sizemore, ABC vice president of health, safety, environment and workforce development. “If we choose to lead, if we choose to commit and if we choose to transform, together we can ensure every construction worker goes home safer, happier, healthier and more fulfilled every single day.”

Sizemore added that transforming the status quo, so that all incidents are viewed as preventable, elevates health and safety to a core value and a shared obligation between employers and employees. Priorities shift, he noted, but values endure, and the STEP framework shows how industry leaders like Alston build that culture while delivering work to communities without incident.

At Alston, safety remains woven into every level of operations, from jobsite protocols to company-wide initiatives like Safety Week, part of the firm’s ongoing Culture Month programming. The Diamond Level designation reflects the collective effort of Alston’s employees, trade partners, and project teams across its 20-plus offices nationwide.

“Congratulations to our entire team on this outstanding achievement and for continuing to uphold our commitment to Safety Never Compromise,” the company said.

STEP participants measure their safety processes and policies against key components and best-practice criteria through a detailed questionnaire, with the goal of implementing or enhancing programs that reduce jobsite incident rates.
