Alston Construction/a+ Automation Integration Management (AIM)
Delivering automation projects from construction through system go-live
Alston Automation Integration Management (AIM/a+) was created to address a critical gap in the market, where complex automation and intralogistics projects often require coordination across multiple contractors, systems, and stakeholders. AIM serves as a single point of accountability, executing automation projects from ground-up construction through installation, integration, and system readiness, ensuring a seamless path to go-live.
Supply Chain Management (Material & Logistics Execution)
We manage and facilitate the physical flow of materials required to install and deliver automation systems, ensuring the right equipment, parts, and components arrive on-site, staged correctly, and ready for installation. Our team operates at the intersection of OEMs, suppliers, and field teams to maintain real-time visibility, prevent delays, and keep projects moving toward system go-live, all while upholding Alston Construction’s industry-leading safety standards.
Quality Assurance & Quality Control
Quality at Alston is a proactive process that begins at project inception and extends through closeout. We recognize that quality is not just about final inspections, it is about embedding excellence in every stage of project delivery. Our Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) processes ensure conformance to project specifications and industry best practices. These include:
- Testing & Verification: Conducting inspections, monitoring material conditions, and ensuring compliance with client-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Risk Management & Documentation: Utilizing robust information systems to track quality metrics and non-conformance resolutions.
- Continuous Improvement: Adopting lessons learned and industry innovations to refine processes.
Construction Management
We deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality and safety. From planning and scheduling to execution and closeout, we coordinate all phases while proactively addressing challenges and keeping communication clear across teams and stakeholders.
Safety & Risk Management
Safety is at the core of every project and one of Alston’s cornerstones. We identify and mitigate risks, enforce strict jobsite protocols, and provide ongoing training to protect personnel and assets while keeping projects on track.
General Contracting
We provide full project oversight, managing scheduling, budgets, subcontractors, and quality control. Our hands-on approach ensures challenges are addressed quickly, delivering turnkey solutions while upholding safety and efficiency standards.
Case Studies
Our team managed the Phase 1 installation of a cutting-edge robotic system in a 960,000 SF operating warehouse with a 175,000 SF footprint. The project included two AIBs, three AOBs, one MIB, and one BOT Lift. While the general contractor handled building upgrades, AIM led the robotic installation, ensuring seamless integration. The Quality Assurance Team conducted 2,364 install validations to meet client requirements.
As our first Phase 1 system, we closely collaborated with the New Braunfels team to ensure smooth execution. This site helped develop Quality Standard Operating Procedures, improving efficiency and accuracy for future projects. The project showcased our ability to manage large-scale automation while strengthening industry partnerships.
As our first project with this repeat client, we built a strong working relationship at the site level, setting the stage for future collaboration. In Phase 2, our team successfully connected a 9-level system to the existing Phase 1 while keeping operations running. The installation included two AIBs, six AOBs, one MIB, and five FLIBs, with a night-time shutdown to incorporate new steel.
To meet the warehouse tenant’s operational needs, our team executed the FLIB mezzanine installation overnight, completing the platform in a single shift. We also streamlined inventory handling by enhancing communication and tracking with the installation teams.
Our team successfully connected a 10-level system to the Phase 1 structure while maintaining facility operations. The installation included two AIBs, six AOBs, one MIB, five FLIBs, and two drain lines, with a strategic night-time shutdown to incorporate new steel. The Quality Assurance Team conducted 3,318 install validations, achieving a 100% completion rate.
To overcome limited laydown space, we used rock instead of asphalt, ensuring a safe, smooth area by collaborating with the general contractor. When material deliveries accelerated, we adjusted by using Product Aisle space for front-end equipment. Our team also helped resolve a design flaw with the main product transfer point, staying over 30 days past de-mobilization to ensure a proper solution. The engaged site owner and successful FLIB install marked key milestones, demonstrating our adaptability and collaboration in meeting client needs while maintaining seamless operations.
AIM successfully completed Phase 1 installation of a 10-level system, including AIBs, AOBs, Drain Lines, and MIBs in a fully operating facility. Despite occasional material shortages, the team ensured smooth progress through excellent communication and daily calls. AIM’s Quality Assurance Team conducted 2,906 install validations, ensuring accuracy per client requirements.
AIM provided valuable on-site guidance, proactively addressing inventory concerns by placing additional orders. Despite challenges, Quality Assurance and Control remained a priority, with a strategic approach increasing the validation acceptance rate by 28.2% over our first site. The tenant’s GC was highly engaged, fostering strong collaboration. The team’s adaptability ensured a successful installation, setting a strong foundation for future phases.
AIM completed the 100,000 SF automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) in Joliet, IL, meeting schedule and client expectations. The project included full installation of racking, conveyors, and automation equipment, as well as rear access construction to support operational efficiency.
